latex compilation problem (kpathsea)

since i installed the recommanded kpathsea:

        1. i have problems compiling files that used to perfectly compile
           it says it can not find some fonts, i.e.:

                address@hidden:~/alto/projects/helico/hsb 3 $ latex 
fax+01.06.29-drp.tex
                ...
                kpathsea: Running mktexmf  phvr7t
                ! I can't find file `phvr7t'.
                <*> ...:=ljfour; mag:=1; nonstopmode; input phvr7t
                ...

           this is really weird! latex (tex) is so big that i don't even dare
           looking to some readme ... and it was working 

           i thought it would use my TEXINPUTS var, but why it doesn't is 'un 
mystere
           pour moi' and the requested font is in:

                   /usr/share/texmf/fonts/afm/adobe/helvetic/


        2. even compiling a letter became a nightmare since: it takes ages and
           always seems to try to build fonts ... so annoying, i. e.

and is          kpathsea: Running mktextfm  cmti12
performed       mktextfm: /var/cache/fonts/tfm/public/cm/cmti12.tfm already 
exists.
every time      kpathsea: Running mktextfm  cmr9
i compile       mktextfm: /var/cache/fonts/tfm/public/cm/cmr9.tfm already 
exists.
a file ???      kpathsea: Running mktextfm  cmbx9
                mktextfm: /var/cache/fonts/tfm/public/cm/cmbx9.tfm already 
exists.
                kpathsea: Running mktextfm  cmti10
                mktextfm: /var/cache/fonts/tfm/public/cm/cmti10.tfm already 
exists.
                [1]kpathsea: Running mktextfm  cmbx10
                mktextfm: /var/cache/fonts/tfm/public/cm/cmbx10.tfm already

so, can someone who know tex, latex, kpathsea ... would be nice and either
help me or tell me where to post this message?

ps:     i also de-installed xdvik and installe xdvi-22.47 which i think is the 
latest
        and it also launch the same 'kpathsea: Running mktextfm  cmr12' ...

        it doesn not display my eps file anymore, is there an configure option
        to have similar settings as we have with xdvik?
