Unfortunately, Lilypond is fairly hungry on memory.
However, you shouldn't get that error message unless
you run out of swap. Thus, increasing the swap might
help but each compilation will run forever, swapping
in and out. I really recommend bying some more RAM,
at home I have an even slower machine (166MHz), but
with 92MB of RAM it handles even some large orchestral
scores in reasonable time.
