Hello to everybody.
As I promised you, here it is a Lily score (Mozart Kegelstatt Trio KV.
498) showing some apparent spacing problems. The score is quite big, so I
rendered the first page using Ghostscript in a .png file (see the
attachment). Note that I used Lilypond 1.5.64.
The problem is in the strange line subdivision: the first line has 6 bars
(perhaps too much compressed), while the second has 3 bars, and the last
one only 2 bars (too much wide).
Unfortunately, my scanner does not work at the moment, so I cannot show
you how my original score (Breitkopf & Haertel edition) appears. In this
score, each line is 20 centimeters long except the first, that is 17.5 cm
long (I placed a `linewidth = 20.0 \cm' in k498-piano.ly to resemble the
Breitkopf score, as you can see), and it places the first 5 bars in the
first line, while the following 5 bars are all on the next line.
Obviously, this spacing is better since lines contain more or less the
same amount of notes.
Please note that the font size is *smaller* in the Lily score (16pt) than
in the Breitkopf one (probably 20pt).
If you would like to get a bit deeper in the problem, you could try to
re-create the score: type `make piano' to create file k498-piano.ps. The
other `make' targets do not consider a linewidth equal to 20 cm.
Thanks
Maurizio
