Did you install buildscripts/out/lilypond-profile?  

How do you process the score?  As a first try, do:

    ly2dvi -P example-1.ly  # found in src package: input/example-1.ly
    gv example-1.ps

If you don't see note heads, run

    ly2dvi -P --verbose example-1.ly

and if you don't have a clue what's wrong, send the output here.
