Speaking as a performer (cello), I'd prefer notes in a chord to be
attached. OTOH, a pianist might prefer to have the notes unattached
(like in the Bach) -- pianists are used to seeing more than one voice
in a staff, whereas on the cello you only see multiple voices in
orchestra music when the celli are divisi.
There is no hard and fast rule; it depends on what instrument it's for,
what the performer likes (if you have somebody specific in mind), and
what you like.
