Ok,

I've tried placing 

\translator{ \StaffContext minimumVerticalExtent = #'(-4 . 4) }

in my paper block to adjust all my staves.  A couple time I got an extra,
empty staff in my score.  On other attempts I got "parse errors".  Here is
my \paper block without the vertical adjustment.  Where does the above
translator go?

                \HaraKiriStaffContext
                }
        }
