Excellent! You showed me how to combine the skips with real notes, which gives me the control I was seeking. This is also useful when adding a diminuendo hairpin to a whole note, in which case you (usually) want the hairpin to end before the next barline.

Is there a way to lengthen the measure when using this technique? The hairpins so produced appear to be short and fat. I would like to extend the measure so that the hairpins look more natural.
