\markup

Having a bit of trouble with \markup (Lilypond-1.7.15 on RedHat 9.0).

Here is a very short example:

\score{

        \notes {R1^\markup {\italic "senza misura"}
        }
}

The markup text comes out in roman type and I get this message:

warning: couldn't find any font satisfying
(#f italic medium number 0)

I found some references to this error in the mail archive but they all
were about v1.5.x.  Am I doing something wrong?
