weird problem

I was putting in a few small adjustments to a file that had been working
fine and then suddenly I'm getting this:

I should probably mention that I've had a couple of build failures with
recent CVS.  I don't know if that is related to this or not.  The last
successful build I had was CVS v.1.7.25 (ChangLog 1.1082).
