Why not use the \rest feature, see

My understanding is this should shift any rest down X spaces down:

{ \restDown fsharp8_.[ r16 fsharp_.] fsharp8_.[ r16 g_.] } >>

In this example, it works up to a point. At about X = -10, the sixteenth rest stops shifting down. This max shift puts the rest about where it would be if \restDown were not included.

What can I do to nudge it a little further down?

Thanks.
