Stems longer when overriding defaults

I've noticed that when I force a part's stems to go the other way using \stemDown or \stemUp, the stems are quite a bit longer than the default stems that are being used for automatically stemmed notes. This creates a slight but noticeable aberration to the overall look and feel of a score. Is there an easy way to fix this?

Thanks,
Carl
