Aaah, this is it! Simple, yet not obvious.
For simple melody voices (without chords) I can do at the
beginning something like this:

\property Current.fingeringOrientations = #'(right)
\property Voice.Fingering \set #'extra-offset = #'(-1.8 . 1.5)

...and I have what I want - fingering right above the note
heads.

BTW, shouldn't fingeringOrientations working for chords only be
considered a bug?
