This should be taken care of by the TEXMF variable. You can check if
it isn't set by some stray shell script that does this.

BTW, it is recommended to use a binary release. IIRC you run redhat?
In that case, you could try the Fedora Core 1 binaries (for 2.1) or
the PlanetCCRMA ones for 2.0.
