yet? This is the right way to do it in LaTeX and works well
in LilyPond as well.

If you keep reading on the page, you'll find exactly an example of
that answers your original question:
He said: "\"Let" my peo ple "go\""
However, I'll add a comment in the manual about the prefer solution
He said: ``Let my peo ple go''

If you use and editor that knows LaTeX (such as Emacs with LaTeX mode), 
it will smarten the quotes the right way.
