To make stem tremolos thinner and shorter for drum-rolls try
\override StemTremolo #'beam-thickness = #0.36
\override StemTremolo #'beam-width = #1.2
I haven't worked out how to get them closer to each other, or to force
angled tremolos on beamed notes.
