Macros A Dud

I installed 2.3.7 to see teh über-1337 slurring in action. When I 
processed a file I had lying around, it choked on keywords I defined:

/Users/spamguy/xyz/defs.ly:3:0: error: parse error:

a = \markup { \bold {a 2} }

Followed by...

/Users/spamguy/xyz/flauti.ly:36:6: error: unknown escaped string: `\a':
        g8^\a r a[( b]) r a(

Is there a formatting change I should be aware of? I searched the list 
records and found nothing discussing this.
