It looks as if your editor adds some extra characters in the
file. Make sure that it doesn't try to use some kind of Unicode
or other multibyte character coding. I just tried version 2.3.13
here using Emacs as the editor using iso-8859-1 character coding
and I get the correct output.

If you tell what operating system and editor you use, you might
get help from others on the mailing list that use the same.
