Small example images?

Hi, I'm a new user of lilypond and I want to make some small images of
musical excerpts to embed in an essay I'm writing. I suppose I could do
this by running lilypond --png and cropping the output image with gimp
or something, but something tells me there must be an easier/cleaner
way. How can I make lilypond output an image file just large enough to
hold the music?
