I forward these questions to the developers list, reformulated into
the following question:
Why isn't it allowed to include a text markup in figured bass?
I think such an obvious feature would handle all the problems described
below.

Yes, in 2.2, the strings were rendered as... blank space!
Now they print out, but I can't figure out how to change their look. [There is a
section in the manual about font for numbers but no actual example.]

(2) I've used a trick that doesn't have anything to do with figured bass, something like :

e2-"\\embeddedps{0.1 setlinewidth 2.5 9 moveto 4 0.5 rlineto stroke}"

which draws a line from the bass note to another point (warning : lily 2.0 !). And it looks exactly like professional figured bass

I would use it in the meantime [will the line be supported any time soon?], but
I was wondering whether that "ugly" trick could be confined to the "figured
bass"
section of the code. I.e. I've defined a variable:

 figuresLowerLH = \figuremode {
     <4>2 <3>4 |
     <9 _+>4 <8>2 |
     <7 _+>4 s <6 5> |
 % etc.
 }

How to add the markup within that section?

(3)

It seems that there were a lot of questions on this subject in the mailling list. I haven't tried to resolve this pb...

Would it be extremely difficult to modify the LilyPond code to make it so
that a blank space, if alone, doesn't actually take horizontal space?

Best,
Gilles
