The quality of the output generated with lilypond --png is a lot lower then that of a pdf. Is there anything I can do about this? Also, I wanna create short examples much like those in the documentation of lilypond, any hints?

I don't know about --png, but as for short examples, I'm not certain what you want. Do you want to have small scores? If so, you can already have
lilypond files like this:
{   c4 c' d d }

If you want to have short (or long!) examples within a text document,
then please read the section about lilypond-book; that's exactly what
it's for.
