I don't know about --png, but as for short examples, I'm not certain
what
you want. Do you want to have small scores? If so, you can already
have
lilypond files like this:
{ c4 c' d d }
If you want to have short (or long!) examples within a text document,
then please read the section about lilypond-book; that's exactly what
it's for.
