Thank you, that's solved my problem perfectly!

For the record, with Slackware 9.1 I've had to do the following for 
configure:

# export LDFLAGS=-L/usr/share/texmf/lib # export 
CPPFLAGS=-I/usr/share/texmf/include # ./configure 
--with-kpathsea-lib=/usr/share/texmf/lib 
--with-kpathsea-include=/usr/share/texmf/include --prefix=$HOME/usr/
