voice chorus plus multiple stanza question

Hello,
I'm frustrated by this problem: the song only has one voice, it starts out with a chorus part with a single verse, then later on in the score, it divides into 5 stanzas of verses of lyrics. To do this, I put the chorus part in stanza 1, and used '\set stanza = "1." when the multiple stanzas begin.
I tried to use the underscore '_'  sign at the beginning of stanzas 2 to 5 and used "\set stanza = "2. " etc where the verse 1's set stanza is.  The problem I'm having is that in the chorus part, underneath verse 1,  there are too much empty spaces. I want the chorus part to look like a song with only one stanza, and when multiple stanzas occur, the score broadens up. How can I do that?
         Thank you so much.
