I'm afraid Alois answer isn't that relevant.

Did you install the ec-fonts-mftraced package?

Is it only a problem with text fonts or are the note heads and
other music symbols also affected?

If you want more accurate help from the mailing list, rather than
wild guesses, I recommend to use 'lilypond --verbose yourfile.ly' to get
more informative printouts that you can include in your email.

Hi,
I have installed Lily 2.4.5 from tarball onto a Gentoo system.
However, all the output (including the doc examples) have only basic font
rendering. The fonts have funny spacing and it looks like it isn't linking
to decent fonts. Difficult to explain, really.

Where could I start to track down what is going on?

Lilypond 2.4.5
Tetex 2.0.2-r5

I have tried a *very* basic test in LaTeX-the typical "hello world"
example, and that is OK. dvips reports that the test uses cmr10.

Hello,
you didn't tell us, how you viewed the files. Did you produce ps-files and view these with ghostview? In that case you should look into the Messages, whether ghostview cannot resolve some fonts. If that's the case, you will have to configure ghostscript so that it knows, where to look for the fonts or you have to configure dvips, to let it download the necessary fonts.

Just a guess
Alois
