The MAc OS X Application has its own editor, and evidently expects one
to open the file from within the program, and then compile it. So it
is not very convenient if one is working in another editor, especially
if the same file is open at the same time in both that editor and the
LilyPond editor.
Ah, I see. The OSX application is a very new thing; previous versions
of lilypond
were completely command-line driven (like latex). I still run lilypond
from the
command line all the time (using vim, my favorite text editor). If
you're interested
in that, take a look at the readme for configuration details.
The OSX editor is a fairly basic text editor; when you "compile" a
score, it just
saves the text file somewhere and calls lilypond on it. There's
absolutely
no disadvantage to using another text editor.
In any case, this is a discussion for -user instead of bugs-.
