From the command line,
$ midi2ly foo.mid
$ lilypond foo.ly

You got this from midi2ly ?!  It looks like you ran lilypond on the 
resulting file.  If so, this is a completely different kind of error 
message.  :)

midi2ly might have produced an incorrect lilypond input file.  Take a 
look at "testemidi2ly.ly" and see if it looks right.
