The following hack seems to work:
 \override TabNoteHead #'stencil = #ly:note-head::print
 \override TabNoteHead #'glyph-name = #"2cross"
 \override TabNoteHead #'style = #'special
 \override TabNoteHead #'stem-attachment = 
#ly:note-head::calc-stem-attachment)
