Trouble getting lilypond-book.py to work on Windows

Hi, I am a TeX user trying to learn Lilypond, so naturally embedding
Lilypond into TeX documents holds a certain appeal. However, I am having
trouble getting lilypond-book.py to work.

The error message is:

Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "C:\Program Files\LilyPond\usr\bin\lilypond-book.py", line 75, in ?
    import lilylib as ly
SystemError: NULL result without error in PyObject_Call

I get a similar error if I comment out the offending line with
fontextract which leads me to the conclusion that it's got something to
do with the import, but I'm not well versed in Python so I don't know
what (null result without error is quite cryptic). The files do exist,
and I've tried moving them to the global Lib folder for Python (with no
avail).

I am using Python 2.4.3 and Lilypond 2.9.4. I have not tried
reinstalling either yet.
