Thanks, tried it, it worked. Still leaves far too much blank space up top, 
however...

That documentation note - I looked up tagline in the index and it pointed me to 
p248, s10.4.2 page formatting. I don't know whether it's documented under 
\header or not, but surely that's where I should have been pointed?
