automatic note splitting and tablature

hello

is there a way to have automatic note splitting working on a tablature
stave? i've tried

\context TabStaff \with {
                \remove "Note_heads_engraver"
                \consists "Completion_heads_engraver"
        } { a4. b c d e }

but it comes out as a mess of numbers and noteheads.
