Is the built-in (OS X) Character Viewer not sufficient?
It's got search capabilities, and definitely "speaks Japanese"...  =)

Hi Kieren,

Where is this magic Character Viewer you speak of? :-) Is it in the
Fontbook? How could I not know about such a thing?
