This sounds to me like a pretty simple coding job for someone fluent  
in Lilypond (Scheme, etc.) -- maybe you (Jimmy) should consider  
sponsoring a macro? e.g.,

    \updown { b c' d' e' b, c'' }

would output

    b c d e b c'
