Lilypond slowness when invoking with *.ly

Hi all,
when processing a number of files, it takes on my machine much more time calling Lily with: "lilypond *.ly" than "lilypond a.ly && lilypond b.ly && ...". 
Is this a general issue with Lily's memory managment?
