Try to transpose your music only into the midi block to achieve the
desired result.

I'm not totally sure about bass guitars, but orchestral upright basses are
written an octave higher than it sounds. So I believe bass guitars are the same.

Also an easier way than transposing in a separate midi block is to preface the
music with "\transposition c".

Thank you for the suggestions. I placed the "\transposition c" within the \new Staff block, and the midi playback is now within the correct (lower) octave.
