By-hand letter tracking: best with \line and \hspace?

Hi,

Wanting to get rid of extra space between larger letter pairs, I've stumbled on this method using \line and negative values to \hspace:

  \line { LID \hspace #-1.75 ER \hspace #-1.65 CFENY  }


Is this in fact the best way to adjust letter tracking by hand?
