Hm, the reason why it doesn't work for me is probably some kind of
interaction with the second voice:

Are there really no means of saying "within one measure, for notes having
durations d1 d2 d3 d4..., produce these exact beams"?  The problem is that
although this looks like a detail, it makes the piece I'm transcribing right
now hard to read, only because notes are not tied into logical groups as
they should be. And adding tons of individual beaming commands all over the
score makes it complicated to read/modify.
