No, it's far from theoretical.
For a start, using cisis specifies the correct intent, since d is not a
note in the dis scale.
Secondly, cisis is not even the same note as d. Or, more correctly,
this is only true in the well-tempered scale. On a fretless stringed
instrument, for example, cisis is played closer to dis than d would be.
This is also true of other enharmonic spellings such as aes and gis.
They are played as different notes on a violin.
