Why not read the section called "Lyrics independent of notes" in the manual?

Thanks for replying James. As it happens, I do use identifiers, but that's not exactly where the problem lies. My difficulty is in the need for \lyricsto to be associated with a specified Voice in the score block (the melody in this case), but it seems that when I identify a Voice either directly or implicitly in a score block, it gets printed, which isn't the behaviour I want.

Am I overlooking something?
