Neither have I. The main problem is that lilypond tries to match moments 
exactly in the output, so that if one beat takes more space (because there is 
a time signature change in some voice), all other voices will also take the 
same space.

I don't know if there is a way to cause lilypond to horizontally space one 
staff separately from the others (i.e. don't match moments exactly 
horizontally). Of course, there should be a rough matching, otherwise the 
tempos will be completely off...
