I installed the 64bit version - it works. It seems that suprisingly I am on a 64 bit machine :-o

It IS run by default. The problem is the following:

$ /usr/local//lilypond/usr/bin/lilypond --verbose test.ly
    

Look, this is NOT /usr/local/bin/lilypond, you cannot run this.

  
So bash says there is no such file, but stat says there is.
    

Bash is complaining about python (or possibly another non-existent
file).  Yes, the error message is very confusing, please complain
to address@hidden . I actually once looked into patching this
bug but it is either quite hard (needs linux kernel patch iirc)
or resource-consuming.
