This does the trick in a bit unorthodox way:
\relative c'' {
\override TextScript #'extra-offset = #'(-2.2 . 1.9)
a b c d |
<a fis>1_\markup { \small "( )" }
}

But there will probably be a better way, without the offset fiddling and
using the space bar...
