Since LilyPond first prepares a list of possible slur shapes to consider and then chooses the "best" one. Changing the positions property may change which shape is considered the best, but the final choice will still be selected from the same list. This is also described in the documentation of the positions property in the Internal Reference (look at slur-interface).
