As to Word, I have been responsible for informal teaching of its use in
computer labs, with clients that were on deadlines, many of whom had no
patience to learn things that would help them beyond the absolute minimum
to get done the work in front of them.  I think of that as the myopic
user; but it also comes down to a major deficiency in tech-writing.

MS Word rovides numerous was of solving many common text layout problems,
it is useful for books and grocery lists.

Kinata and McComb 'Working with Word' eds 1 and 2 are sadly missed in
modern editions; and even they, at some 600+ pp, were not exhaustive
(postscript embedment was treated lightly).

Frankly I think MS has really worked hard to dumb down Word and by
shifting around the menus has even managed to give knowledgeable users
(me) a challenge to find features we know are in  there.
