I disagree (see below). The reason why the rests "look strange" is that the change Pitch gives them a different "pitch" and thereforeaffects their vertical placement.
No. \changePitch simply ignores rests belonging to the pattern. It deals only with notes. (see line 72-73-74 of changePitch.ly) Gilles
