My guess is that the two issues are related.

I don't rename directories like this, but I *have* experienced crashes
in the past when installing/uninstalling LilyPond without first
removing the font cache directory.

I'm hoping that once LilyPond is interacting with Fontconfig correctly
again, these problems will magically go away.  Do you think it's worth
opening a separate issue, given that fixing #975 might also fix this
issue?
