    Try setting 'minimum-length, if you don't mind the note spacing
    being altered:

    % allow minimum-length to work
    \override TextSpanner #'springs-and-rods =
    #ly:spanner::set-spacing-rods

    % tweak length
    \override Textspanner #'minimum-length = #10
