Thank you! I found that adding the following line works:

\once \override DynamicTextSpanner #'springs-and-rods =
#ly:spanner::set-spacing-rods

I had guessed that I needed to use that property but from the
documentation I understood it needed a boolean value and I tested ##t
which did not work without any error message.
