and just put back the old dir name for the version you want to use.
Yes, you can. I do it all the time with Vista and
previously did it all the time with XP.

Verified. Just tried
- renaming my LilyPond directory (on Win XP) containing 2.13.26
-> lilypond -version failed (command not found)
- installing LilyPond 2.13.28
-> new LilyPond directory created by installer
- renaming this new directory
-

lilypond
-version failed
- When renaming one of the two to LilyPond
-> lilypond -version shows the respective version number
Well, this was quite simple for launching such a long thread ...
