right, which are markedly different in thickness.

Nick, you'll get this effect as soon as any scaling is involved. The stems
can be displayed only in integral numbers of pixels.  At normal
magnifications this is either 1 or 2, depending on where the scaled
line falls relative to the pixel grid. To avoid this type of distortion you
need to view at 100% with resolution set to the screen resolution
(usually 96 pixels/inch), or 200% with resolution set to 192 pixels/inch,
etc.
