Trevor, I've downloaded a number of PDF viewers for Windows and taken screen snapshots at 96dpi on Vista of each at 100% scaling (PNG attachment). Problems occur in all of them as to be expected as Lilyponds output is optimised for printer and will have a resolution of probably at least 300dpi. The most common problem seen in these viewers is the rendering of staves that when scaled down do not fall exactly on a pixel. Adobe doesn't seem to anti-alias raster images, but it's font rendering is a lot sharper. Evince does the best overall job IMO.

Phil.

Screen dump of some 2.13.34 output. PDF open at 200% in Adobe Reader
9.3.4 on Ubuntu 10.04. Check the barlines spanning the staffgroups. Four
of the five barline terminations go past the top or bottom line of the
stave. Also look at the stems of the two sixteenth notes at bottom
right, which are markedly different in thickness.

Nick, you'll get this effect as soon as any scaling is involved. The stems
can be displayed only in integral numbers of pixels. At normal
magnifications this is either 1 or 2, depending on where the scaled
line falls relative to the pixel grid. To avoid this type of distortion you
need to view at 100% with resolution set to the screen resolution
(usually 96 pixels/inch), or 200% with resolution set to 192 pixels/inch,
etc.
