This behaviour is mentioned in the Learning Manual. See section 4.3.1 Visibility and color of objects http://lilypond.org/doc/v2.13/Documentation/learning/visibility-and-color-of-objects towards the end of the subsection "stencil". It's not a bug. Trevor
